Exercise and Eating Healthy lead to a healthier body

Health experts agree - in addition to exercise, cutting calories is the single most effective way to lose weight. ANY AMOUNT of exercise you do in addition will help to increase the amount of weight loss. But exercising 60 minutes a day is the amount of exercise needed to prevent WEIGHT GAIN. What this means is that while you are losing weight, it is best to focus on learning about portion control and choosing a healthier diet. Once you have gained mastery over those skills, you can think about aiming at the Surgeon General's recommendation of 30 minutes a day

Eating the right foods and the right amounts of foods can help you live a longer, healthier life. Research has proven that many illnesses—such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure—can be prevented or controlled by eating right. Getting the nutrients you need, such as calcium and iron, and keeping your weight under control can help. Try to balance the calories you get from food with the calories you use through physical activity (select for more information about physical activity). It is never too late to start eating right. Here are some helpful tips.

Eat a variety of foods, especially:

Vegetables. Choose dark-green leafy and deep-yellow vegetables.

Fruits. Choose citrus fruits or juices, melons, and berries.

Dry beans (such as red beans, navy beans, and soybeans), lentils, chickpeas, and peanuts.

Whole grains, such as wheat, rice, oats, corn, and barley.

Whole grain breads and cereals.

Eat foods low in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, especially:

Fish.

Poultry prepared without skin; lean meat.

Low-fat dairy products.

Keep building muscle, exercising, and eating healthy and watch your waistline shrink and your health improve!

The key to getting in shape fast is getting started

In just a few short days Spring will be here! Spring Break has already started for many. In less than three months the unofficial start of Summer will be upon us. Vacation time! School's out for the whole Summer! Days at the beach. Nights at your favorite watering hole. Time for all kinds of outdoor fun.

Is it possible to get in better shape between now and the end of May? Can a person drop some ( or all ) of those unwanted pounds before school lets out? You know you can do it. We CAN get or stick with the program and lose those unsightly bulges around our waist. Slim up those thighs and tighten up that butt.

While a washboard stomach may be a bit far fetched ( or, in my case - totally out of the realm of realism ) between now and June. Some of us may already be on the way to building muscle and sculpting tighter abs and a much flatter stomach.

Yes, there IS still time to get rid of those extra pounds. Time to slim down and look good in a tiny little swimsuit. Now is the best time to start that muscle building program. There's still time to get in shape and fit into that tight little bikini.

Getting in shape fast IS a realistic, and achievable goal. Yes, you can have a slimmer, sexier body before June. Don't wait. Get started today.

building muscle - tune your body

Physical fitness is to the human body what fine tuning is to an engine. It enables us to perform up to our potential. Fitness can be described as a condition that helps us look, feel and do our best. More specifically, it is:
"The ability to perform daily tasks vigorously and alertly, with energy left over for enjoying leisure- time activities and meeting emergency demands. It is the ability to endure, to bear up, to withstand stress, to carry on in circumstances where an unfit person could not continue, and is a major basis for good health and well-being."

Focus on the following key elements of getting and staying fit:

Warmup - 5-10 minutes of exercise such as walking, slow jogging, knee lifts, arm circles or trunk rotations. Low intensity movements that simulate movements to be used in the activity can also be included in the warmup.

Building Muscle is easy with a minimum of two 20-minute sessions per week that include exercises for all the major muscle groups. Lifting weights is the most effective way to increase strength.

Muscular Endurance - at least three 30-minute sessions each week that include exercises such as calisthenics, pushups, situps, pullups, and weight training for all the major muscle groups.

Cardio - at least three 20-minute bouts of continuous aerobic (activity requiring oxygen) rhythmic exercise each week. The Bowflex TreadClimber is ideally suited for getting maximum results in the shortest time. Mix it up - try a variety of aerobic conditioning activities. Get out and enjoy the fun of walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, rope-jumping, rowing, cross-country skiing, and tennis, racquetball and handball.

Flexibility - 10-12 minutes of daily stretching exercises performed slowly, without a bouncing motion. This can be included after a warmup or during a cooldown.

The Cool Down - at least 5-10 minutes of slow walking, low-level exercise, combined with stretching. This is when you really get that great sense of calm and accomplishment. The cool down is SO relaxing.Keep moving. Enjoy the good feeling!

Patience is essential. Don’t try to do too much too soon and don’t quit before you have a chance to experience the rewards of improved fitness. You can’t regain in a few days or weeks what you have lost in years of sedentary living, but you can get it back if your persevere. And the prize is worth the price.

Building Muscle

Some interesting facts about sports nutrition:

You can survive for a month without food, but only a few days without water.

* Water is the most important nutrient for active people.

* When you sweat, you lose water, which must be replaced. Drink fluids before, during, and after workouts. Especially before!

* Water is a fine choice for most workouts. However; during continuous workouts of greater than 90 minutes, your body may benefit from a sports drink. Try some gatorade and half a banana! Or an orange!

* Sports drinks have two very important ingredients - electrolytes and carbohydrates

* Sports drinks replace electrolytes lost through sweat during workouts lasting several hours.

* Carbohydrates in sports drinks provide extra energy. The most effective sports drinks contain 15 to 18 grams of carbohydrate in every 8 ounces of fluid.

Got Carbs?

Carbohydrates are your body's main source of energy.

* Carbohydrates are sugars and starches, and they are found in foods such as breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables, pasta, milk, honey, syrups and table sugar.

* Sugars and starches are broken down by your body into glucose, which is used by your muscles for energy.

* For health and peak performance, more than half your daily calories should come from carbohydrates.

* Sugars and starches have 4 calories per gram, while fat has 9 calories per gram. In other words, carbohydrates have less than half the calories of fat.

* If you regularly eat a carbohydrate-rich diet you probably have enough carbohydrate stored to fuel activity. Even so, be sure to eat a precompetition meal for fluid and additional energy. What you eat as well as when you eat your precompetition meal will be entirely individual.

Flexing Your Options to Build Bigger Muscles
It is a myth that eating lots of protein and/or taking protein supplements and exercising vigorously will definitely turn you into a big, muscular person.

* Building muscle depends on your genes, how hard you train, and whether you get enough calories.

* The average American diet has more than enough protein for muscle building. Extra protein is eliminated from the body or stored as fat.

Score with Vitamins and Minerals
Eating a varied diet will give you all the vitamins and minerals you need for health and peak performance.

* Exceptions include active people who follow strict vegetarian diets, avoid an entire group of foods, or eat less than 1800 calories a day. If you fall into any of these categories, a multivitamin and mineral pill may provide the vitamins and minerals missing in your diet.

* Taking large doses of vitamins and minerals will not help your performance and may be bad for your health. Vitamins and minerals do not supply the body with energy and, therefore are not a substitute for carbohydrates.

Popeye and All That Spinach
Iron supplies working muscles with oxygen.

* If your iron level is low, you may tire easily and not have enough stamina for activity.

* The best sources of iron are animal products, but plant foods such as fortified breads, cereals, beans and green leafy vegetables also contain iron.

* Iron supplements may have side effects, so take them only if your doctor tells you to.

No Bones About It, You Need Calcium Everyday
Many people do not get enough of the calcium needed for strong bones and proper muscle function.

* Lack of calcium can contribute to stress fractures and the bone disease, osteoporosis.

* The best sources of calcium are dairy products, but many other foods such as salmon with bones, sardines, collard greens, and okra also contain calcium. Additionally, some brands of bread, tofu, and orange juice are fortified with calcium.
