A Better Life

Ever wish you could have more energy? Have you ever wanted to make life more fun? Maybe wished you could improve your outlook a little or just plain find a better sense of happiness?

Two Simple Habits will help you change your life for the Better! Get more exercise. Do it every day. And 2nd – start eating healthy foods!

Try these easy tips for better health and fitness:

Breakfast refills your empty tank and helps get you going after a long night without food. A healthy breakfast helps you do better in school or at work. Why not start every day with a healthy breakfast!

Try plain old shredded wheat with some fruit and a glass of low-fat milk, or whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit, whole-grain waffles or even last night’s pizza!

Get Up and Get Moving!
It’s easy to fit physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see friends. Take a 10-minute activity break every hour while you read, do homework or watch TV. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day.

Snack smart.
Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different food groups – a glass of low-fat milk and a few graham crackers, an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins, or some dry cereal. If you eat smart at other meals, cookies, chips and candy are OK for occasional snacking.

Work up a sweat.
Vigorous work-outs – when you’re breathing hard and sweating – help your heart pump better, give you more energy and help you look and feel your best.
The harder you work your body the quicker you’ll see positive results. Want to lose a few inches around the waistline? Maybe you want to get rid of that pot belly. Get in at least 30 minutes of vigorous walking or running every day. Can’t quite make 30 minutes yet – no problem – just start small. Build up your workout time gradually!

Always start with a warm-up that stretches your muscles. Then shoot for at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity, like running, jogging, or even dancing. Follow-up with some strength building exercises such as push-ups or lifting weights. For healthy and flexible muscles – always cool-down with more stretching and deep breathing.

Balance your food choices – don’t eat too much of any one thing.
You don’t have to give up foods like hamburgers, french fries and ice cream to eat healthy. You just have to be smart about how often and how much of them you eat. Your body needs nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat and many different vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and A, iron and calcium from a variety of foods.

Balancing food choices will help you get all these nutrients.

Get fit with friends or family.
Being active is much more fun with friends or family. Encourage others to join you and plan one special physical activity event, like a bike ride or hiking, with a group each weekend. Make some time for yourself or you and a fitness buddy every day.

You can have more energy for all life’s fun pursuits. If losing weight is one of your goals – the quickest way to lose weight is with exercise and healthy eating! Just twenty or thirty minutes, four or five days a week can help you lose weight and keep it off!

Winning the Weight Loss Game

Lasting, healthy weight loss is really a numbers game. Take in fewer calories and burn more. If you want a better looking, slimmer body shape - toss in some daily exercise!

Losing weight, gaining weight or maintaining your weight depends on the amount of calories you take in and use up during the day, otherwise referred to as energy balance. Learning how to balance energy intake (calories in food) with energy output (calories expended through physical activity) will help you achieve your desired weight.

Although the underlying causes and the treatments of obesity are complex, the concept of energy balance is relatively simple. If you eat more calories than your body needs to perform your day's activities, the extra calories are stored as fat. If you do not take in enough calories to meet your body's energy needs, your body will go to the stored fat to make up the difference. (Exercise helps ensure that stored fat, rather than muscle tissue, is used to meet your energy needs.) If you eat just about the same amount of calories to meet your body's energy needs, your weight will stay the same.

All too often, those of us who want to lose weight concentrate on counting calories. Its too easy to overlook the calories we use up - or burn. Health experts agree - the quickest way to lose weight is the combination of eating healthy and daily exercise. By increasing your daily physical activity and decreasing your caloric input you can lose excess weight in the most efficient and healthy way!

Adding just 15 minutes of moderate exercise, say walking one mile, to your daily routine will burn or use up 100 extra calories per day. (Your body uses up or burns approximately 100 calories of energy to walk one mile, depending on your body weight.) A daily 15 minute walk could result in an extra 700 calories per week used up, or a loss of about 10 pounds in one year, assuming your food intake stays the same.

To look at energy balance another way, just one extra slice of bread or one extra soft drink a day – or any other food that contains approximately 100 calories – can add up to ten extra pounds in a year if the amount of physical activity you do does not increase. If you want better results - start today. Enjoy eating healthy foods, exercise and lose weight fast!

Getting Started

No matter at what age you begin to exercise, or how long you may have been inactive, proper exercise will always improve your physical condition. It is important to begin any exercise program slowly and build up gradually. Remember, it may take several months ( or longer ) to reach your fitness goals. Depending on where you are today.

If weight loss is one of your goals - you can eat healthy, exercise and lose weight fast. Don't rush it though. Stick with a pace you feel comfortable with. Challenge yourself until you feel the need to back off! Enjoy the journey! And keep moving. The more frequently you exercise the quicker you'll see results!

Before beginning an exercise program, you might want to visit with a health care professional or even have a physical examination. If your mobility is limited as a result of a chronic or disabling condition, be sure to review your plans with your doctor. Keep in mind your level of ability and endurance so that you don't risk discomfort or injury. If you experience pain while exercising, stop that particular movement and ask your doctor about it on your next visit.

Stick with it, and you will see results!

Here's some tips to help get you going:

Warming Up

Preparing your body for exercise is important at any age and all fitness levels. A warm-up period should begin with slow, rhythmic activities such as walking or jogging in place.

Gradually increase the intensity until your pulse rate, respiration rate and body temperature are elevated, which is usually about the time that you break a light sweat. Do some easy stretching exercises before moving into the heart of your workout.

Once you begin your daily exercise routine, keep these points in mind to get the best results:

Always drink water before, during and after your exercise session.

Make exercising a part of your daily routine. You may want to set a regular time to exercise each day! Write it in your planner. Invite a friend to join you in the fun.

Start gradually, about 5 to 10 minutes at first. Gradually build upon your time and the intensity of your workouts! Increase the amount of exercise each day, up to about 30 to 60 minutes.

Breathe deeply and evenly during and between exercises. Never hold your breath.

Rest whenever you feel the need. Your body will let you know!

Keep a daily written record of your progress. Look back a few weeks and see how much you've progressed. You might amaze yourself!

Exercise to your favorite music or with friends for even more fun. Put a funny comedy in the DVD player and jump on your elliptical. You'll work off some pounds and have a blast!

Cool Down

If you have been participating in a vigorous workout or sport - you know the kind of workout that leaves you breathing fast - it is extremely important not to stop suddenly. Abrupt stopping interferes with the return of the blood to the heart and could even cause dizziness or fainting. Slow down and reduce the intensity of your exercise gradually.

Walk it off for a few minutes until your breathing returns to a more normal pace. Always end with a few slow stretches. Take your time and focus on your breathing and the muscles you are stretching.

You can have a better life. A healthier and happier life - full of more fun and energy! Start today! If you are wanting to lose some weight this year - the quickest way to lose weight is start getting in shape fast! Exercise most days and keep eating healthy foods. Soon you'll feel better and look better.

Keep Eating Healthy Foods and Exercise Daily

You are what you eat may be more truth than many of us ever imagined!

If you already have a lean figure and want to keep it you should exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet that provides enough calories to make up for the energy you expend. If you wish to gain weight you should exercise regularly and increase the number of calories you consume until you reach your desired weight. Exercise will help ensure that the weight you gain will be lean muscle mass, not extra fat.

The Diet

A balanced diet is an integral part of any weight control plan. For the best results a diet high in complex carbohydrates and moderate in protein and fat will be a healthy complement to any exercise program. It should include enough calories to satisfy your daily nutrient requirements and include the proper number of servings per day from the "basic four food groups": vegetables and fruits (4 servings), breads and cereals (4 servings), milk and milk products (2 - 4 depending on age) and meats and fish (2).

Health experts recommend that your daily calories stay above 1200 calories unless you are under a doctor's supervision. For healthy, lasting weight loss your weekly weight loss should not exceed two pounds.

Remarkable - even miraculous - claims have been made for a variety of "crash" diets and diet pills. And some of these very restricted diets do result in noticeable weight loss in a short time. All too often all you lose is water and such a loss is quickly regained when normal food and liquid intake is resumed. These diet plans are often expensive and may be dangerous. Moreover, they usually fail to emphasize lifestyle changes that will help you maintain your desired weight. Dieting alone will result in a loss of valuable body tissue such as muscle mass in addition to a loss in fat.

Adding 15 minutes of moderate exercise, say walking one mile, to your daily schedule will use up 100 extra calories per day. (Your body uses approximately 100 calories of energy to walk one mile, depending on your body weight.) Maintaining this schedule would result in an extra 700 calories per week used up, or a loss of about 10 pounds in one year, assuming your food intake stays the same. To look at energy balance another way, just one extra slice of bread or one extra soft drink a day – or any other food that contains approximately 100 calories – can add up to ten extra pounds in a year!

Medical experts agree - the quickest way to lose weight is with plenty of exercise and eating healthy foods in
moderation! You can enjoy eating healthy, exercise daily and lose weight fast!

Dieting is Easier When You Love the Food. Delicious meals shipped to your door. It's a proven strategy that works!

The Keys to a Slimmer Body

Do you dream of having a slimmer waistline? Maybe you'd like to have a tighter stomach and more muscles? Many of us would settle for losing tat belly fat and toning up the arms and legs! The keys are right there for you to grab and unlock the secrets to a slimmer, sexier body.

Key # 1: Today is the best day to start losing that stomach fat. Get up and start walking or running. Go as far as you can. When you get back home - make yourself a small meal of mostly fruits and veggies. No sugar or white bread allowed. If you're like me and you love a great burger - have it on whole wheat bread. Avoid white. Get your protein from egg whites and spinach - try to cut back on the meat for a while.
And no fried anything. Sorry - I love fried chicken too.

Key #2. Repeat the first step for two weeks. Daily runs or long, fast paced walks and more veggies and fruits than any other foods. I love beer and a glass of wine is great with many meals. If you must drink - make it one! Switch to water. No soda - just water. Toss in a slice of lime if you like. Skip the drive-thru window and bring something healthy to snack on at lunch. We all enjoy the speed and convenience of fast food. If you want to lose weight - limit the fast food!

Key # 3 - Write down your weight goal. Your ideal weight and body shape. Get a picture of someone who already has the kind of body you wish you had and hang it on the refrigerator door. Every day - read our goal(s), and take a look at the picture on the fridge to remind yourself. Did I mention tossing all those sugary snack foods so many of us keep handy? Yes, the Ben & Jerry's has to go too. ( Maybe after a few weeks you can feel good enough to reward yourself with one small scoop of ice cream. )

Key # 4. At the end of week two - evaluate your progress. Be honest with yourself. Are you running or walking at least five of every seven days? Are you sticking with a healthy eating plan? Are your clothes starting to feel loose? Find ways to fit in more exercise in the coming weeks. ( Revisit that picture on the fridge! )

Key # 5 - Get some simple home fitness equipment to help you keep moving. Gradually start working out a little longer and a little harder. Start with some simple weight bearing exercises. Maybe using small dumbbells at first. The old classic push-up is still a great way to build up your arms and chest! If you use weights - only lift every other day. Your muscles will need a day of rest between workouts!

Key 6. Find something new to help you vary your workouts. The SmoothFlow R80 Rower will give your arms and stomach more tone and help you burn off some major fat calories! The key here is to develop a variety of exercise options. Maybe you'd have more fun joining a tennis league after work. Or taking up golf. Your options are almost endless! Find something you can enjoy! Keep walking or running five days a week!

Key # 7 - Enlist one or more friends to join you in the quest for better health. Exercise - of any kind is more fun when you are with someone. If you exercise regularly at home enjoy a comedy while you burn those calories. Laughter is great for your health! Stick with daily habits - eating healthy foods and exercise. Ignite your Workout and Start Getting in Shape Fast!

Picking up the pace of your aerobic exercise helps you burn more calories in less time.

Pick any cardio exercise you enjoy - like running, swimming, or even walking. After warming up for a few minutes, pick up the pace for 30 seconds or so. Go as fast as you can safely handle. Then, slow back down to a more moderate, easier pace for a couple minutes. Once you feel like your breathing has returned to a more normal rate - kick it into high gear again for a half a minute. Then slow it down again until you catch your breath.

Repeat this series eight times. You'll ignite your workout and burn more calories in less time! Picking up the pace earlier in your run kick starts your calorie burner! Your metabolism will stay higher longer and you'll burn calories long after you end your workout!

Vary your workouts. Keep it fun. Try some simple calisthenics like we all learned in middle school. Millions of healthy fitness buffs still include the old standard push-up in their workouts. And squats. Simple and effective.

Try new sports - These cold days of Winter are perfect for some indoor basketball or tennis. Jump-start your preparations for those Summer leagues! When spring arrives get outside and enjoy nature while you walk or run. Gardening even helps some people burn off some calories and reduce their stress level. The key is fun - make your workouts fun!

If you've been inactive for a while - take your time getting into this regimen. Pick up the pace for only as long as you safely can. Gradually build your endurance and your intensity!

If weight loss is one of your goals - the quickest way to lose weight is with exercise. Lots of exercise combined with healthy eating choices will help you lose those extra pounds and feel way better about yourself!

Start getting in shape fast. Give your workouts that extra boost. Pick up the pace a few times for 30 seconds or so next time you go for a jog and burn more calories for hours after your run.

The Best Way to Start

We all have to start somewhere! The simplest steps can eventually lead to great results. Start getting in shape fast by taking a walk. Yes, a nice, peaceful, energizing walk. Burn some calories and let your mind wander. Catch up on your thoughts while you enjoy nature and start your journey to a younger looking, healthier body!

Go for a walk. It’s that easy to reap the benefits of moderate endurance
exercise. Each time you exercise, simply walk a little farther. As the weeks pass, gradually increase the pace, or speed, of your walks. Vary your pace. After a few minutes - try walking as fast as you can for two minutes. Then, return to a normal brisk pace. You kickstart your metabolism when you pick up the pace like that.

Every two weeks, increase the duration of your workout by five minutes. Also, add five minutes of total-body stretches to the beginning and end of your workouts (for a total of 10 minutes of stretching). Improving your flexibility makes your workouts easier over time.

After exercising moderately for a month, add a five-minute vigorous workout three days a week. For example, if you’re walking, speed up to a fast walk or slow jog for a total of five minutes, on three of the days you work out. After two weeks, increase the higher intensity portion of the workout to 10 minutes. Two weeks later, increase it to 15 minutes of vigorous exercise, and then two weeks later do 20 minutes of vigorous activity, three to four days a week. This is a healthy activity that will help you reduce your chance of illness and find more pleasure and vigor in your life.

If you can’t walk for 30 minutes at one time, take 5-, 10-, or 15-minute walks
throughout the day. It all adds up to better health. Start today - Exercise is the quickest way to lose weight!

You’re probably already walking more than you think. And by taking advantage of opportunities all around you to walk more every day, you’ll be surprised at how quickly the steps add up! Walk up the stairs instead of riding the escalator at the mall; take an after dinner walk with your family; choose the farthest spot in the lot at work; eat lunch outdoors instead of at your desk and walk around the block after you eat.

Walking 30 minutes or more a day at a brisk pace is an excellent start to better health and fitness! You can look younger and feel younger. You can have more energy and a better outlook on life. Start getting in shape fast and watch your whole life get better!

The Optimist

Numerous studies confirm that optimists live longer, more satisfying lives. So if you’re not an optimist, strive to implement a more positive outlook. Vow to make your first thought of the day a positive one, and read some inspirational affirmations to start your day. Many people enjoy starting their day with a positive Bible verse. The key is to start thinking good thoughts first thing in the morning.

Whether you want to lose ten pounds ( or the 20 I hope to shed ) or just get in better shape – if you keep a positive attitude and know that you can reach your desired goal – you most likely will. I think it was Henry Ford who said – “If you think you can or think you can’t – you’re right”. Create a vision of your goal – visualize yourself wearing a new, smaller size before Labor Day. Or, at least before the Holidays are upon us.

Then set out and take action. Start small if you like. Just start! Take at least a little action in the direction of your goal each day.

Start with a 10 minute walk. When the famous inspirational speaker - Zig Ziglar - started jogging, his first day he went a hundred yards. Everyone has to start somewhere – just like Zig did. Before too long he was jogging around the block. And then a mile. And then two.

Gradually increase your time and your pace. Walk a little farther and a little faster each day. When you start to feel comfortable – start jogging. Again, take it slow – and don’t try to go too far too fast. I met an incredible, happy women who lost over a hundred pounds just walking every day and eating sensibly. It took her a year and a half – but she stuck with her daily walk and succeeded!

Add some variety to your plan - try new sports. Take a completely different route next time you jog or head out for a long walk. It will keep your mind sharp and prevent you from getting into a rut. A variety of sports and exercise routines will help you maintain a better balanced level of fitness. Work your legs harder one day and your arms the next.

Don’t look back - stay focused on making the best of today! Enjoying right now! Or, at least, making the best of whatever life brings your way!

If you want a healthier, slimmer body - the quickest way to lose weight is start getting in shape fast!

Obesity has been linked to increased risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as diabetes and cancer. Sixty percent of adult Americans are either overweight or obese. Middle-aged folks are not the only ones susceptible to getting a "spare tire" around their waist. The number of overweight adolescents has tripled since 1980. 14% of those aged 12 to 19 are considered to be overweight, and three quarters of them go on to be overweight as adults.

Don't let these numbers get you down. Act now! Make the choice to enjoy life more. To look and feel younger and more energetic!

Experts recommend at least three 20 minute sessions of exercise per week. If you are trying to lose a significant amount of weight, 5 times a week may be what you need. If you ride a subway or bus to work, get off one stop early to get some extra exercise. If the weather outside isn't too cold - enjoy a lunch-time walk or after-supper journey!

Set Your Sails for Better Fitness in the New Year

The Steps to better fitness are quite like the steps you would take in most any endeavor.

Decide what you want:
Write down your goal. Get a picture of what you want to look like. Put a picture of your favorite beach on your dresser - make it the first thing you see in the morning and the last before you settle in at night. Keep a picture of the perfect, ideal body on your fridge - or on your desk. Constantly reinforce your desire.

Put together a plan:
Break your goal into small, manageable tasks. Like walk 20 miles a week by February 1. ( That's only about 3 miles a day - a Very reasonable goal! )

Do three sets of ten push-ups every other day by March 1.

Same for crunches on your exercise ball ( you get more out of your crunches when you do them on the ball!

Swim for 20 minutes twice a week.

Jog for 20 minutes 3 times a week.

You get the idea.

Focus on taking the steps required. Act upon your plan. Every day! Do something towards the completion of your goal(s). Hard work wins out here! You can't delegate anyone to run your laps or do your strength training!

Get feedback. Assess your results each week. Each month. Are you hitting your targets? If not, maybe you can adjust the plan accordingly. Shoot for the moon - wherever you land is way better than where you were when you started!

Keep after it. Never give up. Perseverance helps you reach your goal. Keep focusing on the daily action steps towards your goal!

All these steps are much easier if you make it fun. Do your workouts with friends. Vary your routines. Play a variety of sports. Whatever you find most fun!

If weight loss is one of your goals - the quickest way to lose weight fast (and keep it off) is with daily exercise.

Do you want to look good on Spring Break? Or at the beach this Summer? Start now! Make a little progress each day. Those little bits add up to a whole lot! And don't forget to keep eating healthy foods. You can have a much leaner body before Spring Break - and a tighter tummy by Summer! The choice is yours! Go for it!
